Republican Party Biographical Sketches

John McCain

John McCain, former POW and senior senator from Arizona, is the Republican candidate for president this year. He was born on August 29, 1936, at Coco Naval Air Station in the area of the Panama Canal. Joseph McCain Jr., his father, was a four-star admiral of the US navy. His mother was named Roberta. The second of three children, John McCain’s early years were spent I various naval bases in and abroad from the US. He graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1954. In 1958, he graduated from the Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1958, and then proceeded to finish flight school in the year 1960.

When the Vietnam War occurred, John McCain immediately volunteered. He flew low-altitude bombing runs on North Vietnam. On July 29, 1967, he was nearly seriously injured when a missile accidentally exploded on the USS Forestall, the fires and explosions resulting from the bomb killed 134 people. On December 9, 1969, the day of McCain’s 23rd bombing run, he was shot down over Hanoi and broke both arms and a leg. Taken as a prisoner of war, he spent five and a half years in various prisons, three and a half of which were solitary confinement. He was beat and tortured frequently throughout his stay. Although he was repeatedly offered early release, because they found out who his father was, he refused because he would have violated the US military code of conduct. When he and his fellow prisoners were released on March 14, 1973, John McCain earned several awards, the Purple Heart, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Silver and Bronze Stars. After his release, he rehabilitated from his injuries for nine months, but they still halted any more advancement in the military.

John McCain was first introduced to the political scene in 1976, when he was appointed as the Navy’s liaison to the US Senate. John met his first wife in 1965, her name was Carol Shepp. They divorced in 1980, and in 1981, McCain married Cindy Hensley, then he retired from the navy and moved to Phoenix, Arizona, to work in his father’s beer-distribution business and to begin creating political contacts. In the year 1982, John McCain was elected to the House of Representatives, and he was reelected in 1984. He was elected to the US Senate in 1986, but in 1987, John McCain was suspected and investigated to find out if he was a member of the “Keating 5,” a group of senators who were accused of intervening with federal regulators on Charles H Keating’s request. McCain was cleared of all charges, and Charles Keating’s “Lincoln Savings and Loan Association” became one of the biggest failures in the loan and savings disasters of the 1980’s.

McCain weathered the scandal, and was reelected to the US Senate three times, and supported the increase of tobacco legislation and a reform of the campaign finance system. He published a book, Faiths of my Fathers, an account of his family’s military history and his experiences as a POW (Prisoner Of War). In 2000, John McCain was a serious contender with Bush for the Republican presidential nomination. It was close, but Bush won in the end. In August of 2000, he was diagnosed with skin cancer on his arms and face. He underwent surgery to remove them, and the cancer is completely gone now. In the year 2001, McCain’s joint effort with Democratic senator Russell D. Feingold, after six years, came to fruition. In 2003 the Supreme Court decided to uphold his proposed bill to restrict unlimited contributions to political parties.

McCain supported Bush throughout his reelection campaign, even though their opinions differ on several points. He also supported the “surge” of 20,000 soldiers to Iraq, which he says has improved security. After Bush’s second term, McCain could run for the presidency, and so he is running now.

Sarah Palin

Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska and self-confessed WalMart shopper, is running for vice president on the Republican ticket. She was born in Sandpoint, Idaho, on February 11, 1964. Her parents are named Charles and Sally. At the age of three months, her family moved to Alaska in the year 1964, and Sarah grew up in a town called Wasilla. Sarah Palin went to Wasilla High School and graduated in the year 1982, and then she attended the University of Idaho until 1987, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Communications-Journalism.

After College, Sarah married Todd Palin, a fisherman and four-time-winner of the Iron Dog, the world’s longest snowmobile race. Her five children are named Willow, Trig, Piper, Track, and Bristol. Trig, her youngest, has Down Syndrome. She is a lifelong NRA member and enjoys hunting and fishing. Sarah Palin is pro-life and the chair of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Corporation.

When she was elected the eleventh governor and first female governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin invested $5 billion into state savings, funding to overhaul the education system, and a senior benefits program. She has also helped finance a $40 billion oil pipeline to be built in Alaska, and one of her major goals is to open up oil drilling in several protected Alaskan areas.

Reform. Prosperity. Peace.

Political Collages

The Republican Party stands for changes to social policies in the United States. Republicans hope to reverse Roe v. Wade and make it illegal again for women to have abortions. They also support the death penalty, tax breaks for corporations, prayer in schools, abstinence only education in schools, spreading Christianity and Christian values, drilling for oil in Alaska’s protected ANWR, and a large defense and war budget. They want to change the way individuals live by changing moral laws in America. The Republicans also want to change the way individuals live by paying private companies to complete more of the tasks the government once had.

The Democratic Party stands for changes to the way the United States has been doing business for the last eight years. They want to continue working towards equal rights for minorities and women, protect a woman’s right to choose to have an abortion, protect people from poisons in their foods by making companies label the ingredients, offer gay and lesbian couples the same rights as married couples, help the poor and the homeless with better social programs, improve schools and education, stop the war and bring our soldiers back home, and work to help the restore the rest of the world’s opinion of America. Democratic policies would help individuals, especially minorities and the poor to have equal access to medical care, education, careers, and housing.

Technology Issues

Barack Obama

Barack Obama’s opinion on technology, specifically the Internet, is that it is a tool that can be used to better the United States of America. He wishes to increase the amount of tech-savvy individuals in the USA by encouraging math and science in education.

On the subject of the Internet, Barack Obama works to increase access as well as security. Barack Obama is attempting to ensure that most American citizens have access to the Internet, and hopes that we will lead the way into the new era of technology.

Political Cartoons

This political cartoon exposes John McCain’s false claims of being an “average American man.” For example, a man is nailing a ‘support McCain’ sign to a run-down shack of a house. This implies that even though McCain is rich and high class, people will still believe that he is one of them. To the right of the man is a woman she is questioning the man’s support for McCain. This is because McCain does not know how many houses he owns and the depicted couple only owns two, their house and their outhouse. When a person claims to be something, they should really be it.

The government and loan brokers are attempting to regain the common person’s trust, while simultaneously forcing them to shoulder the burden of paying for a collapsing economy. For example, there is a man representing the mortgage brokers who is saying “Trust Me” while he is giving a trash can, representing risky loans, to a man who represents the investors and banks. This shows that the investors and banks do not see the bad investments for what they are. Following, Ben Bernanke is handing a trash can representing risky loans to a women representing the taxpayers, and saying “Trust me,” although the woman is giving him a funny look and not taking the loans. Exposing that Bernanke is trying to patch the situation by lying to the tax-payers and trying to make them take the burden of the collapsing economy onto themselves. When it comes to money and investments, a person needs to look past the words being said to view the whole issue.

When John McCain is defeated in a debate, he gets very angry. For example, a man wearing bulky suit is saying “The debates are finished, senator, and your car is waiting” to McCain with an open-backed truck in the background with the words “Bomb Squad” on the side. Meaning that, when McCain is defeated, many people consider him a ticking bomb. This is supported by the fact that McCain is giving off smoke and looks murderously angry. This alludes to McCain’s short temper. John McCain’s short temper makes people be cautious around him because they fear he could explode at any comment.

Bombs are often used in analogies to McCain because of his short temper. For example, a Secret Service agent is speaking to another and saying “Careful. It could go off at any moment. If you’re in range you’re toast.” the second replies “A bomb? Where?” and the third one says “Shh… He’s talkin’ about McCain, you idiot…” This shows that even the Secret Service agents assigned to McCain regard him as a threat. McCain is standing in the center of the trio of men and looks like he is seething in rage. This implies that McCain is angry all the time. McCain is regarded by many people as an explosive threat to their safety.

The Dollar’s value is going down at a steady rate. For instance, a jagged line with an arrow moving down is piercing through a picture of George Washington. This implies that the falling economy is destroying the US Dollar’s value. It is also implying that, by the breaking of a picture of a founding father, the economic situation is destroying the United States of America. The US Dollar is losing its value when compared to many foreign currencies.

The $700 billion bailout bill will not help us in the long run, but will only cripple the taxpayers in the future. For example, Uncle Sam is in a sinking boat (the economy) and is trying to bail out water with a paper bag labeled “700 $ Bailout.” This shows that the bailout is an effort to keep our nation from sinking into depression. The paper bag has a hole in it and water if flowing through the hole in the bag. This implies that even though the bailout looks good on paper, it will not help at all in practice. The $700 billion bailout will only hurt our economy.

Reflection: Applying the Essential Question to the Political Cartoon

Photobucket

People use humor as a coping mechanism when the current times are in bad shape. My six political cartoons represent how an individual will comment on a society with humor. For example, all of my political cartoons except for one (the stock market one) are poking fun at the government. The aforementioned stock market cartoon is showing how the falling stock market is destroying the dollar’s value. Humor is an important tool as it helps people understand what a person is saying.

Political Interview with Kama Heck

  • Which presidential candidate do you currently support?

  • Kermit the Frog. No, I am kidding. But, Kermit would make a terrific candidate. I am voting for Barack Obama.

  • Why do you support that candidate?

  • I am voting for Obama because he is a brilliant man who I believe will make an exceptional leader for this nation.

  • Why do you not support the other candidates?

  • I do not support the war machine.

  • Do you believe 50% or more of the propaganda spouting simultaneously from both candidates? About how much of the truth do you see in your favored candidate’s words?

  • I have not heard any because I haven’t had TV in my home since 1992. I choose to ignore media that reports that kind of thing and instead listen to international news on the radio and a few NPR programs.

  • What do you think your candidate will do about the following issues:

  • 1. The Iraq War.

What can truly be done at this point about that nightmare that never should have happened. I certainly would like to see our nation stop dropping bombs on foreign nations in order to attempt to control the oil trade. Our policy since the end of WW2 has been most successful when it comes to killing for oil.
    2. The Economic Crisis.
How about some oversight and regulations? That is a no brainer. Unchecked greed is what got those financial investors into their current mess. I do not support a bail out for corporations and shareholders who made risky business decisions.
    3. Our dependence on oil for our energy needs.
This is where Kermit the Frog should come in. He is “green” after all. Follow Europe’s lead and stop all the welfare for energy companies. Invest in sustainable energy and agriculture which does not consume mass amounts of oil.

Kama Heck responded in a way that makes her fit right in with Barack Obama’s issues and opinions. The interview answers show that she is a compassionate individual in the community. If Kama was chosen as a representative of our community, we would look more peaceful than what we are considered to be now. Change on society by the individual is reflected in Kama in that she wishes our society to become a more economical and environmentally friendly nation.

    State Prediction: New Jersey

I choose New Jersey because I lived there for most of my life. I support Obama, and I want hi to clean up the environment in New Jersey. I have asthma, so the pollution was a major factor in moving to North Carolina. Although I left, I wish to go back to live in the north, specifically the mountains of New Jersey, and I can’t unless the pollution is cleaned up.

My linear regression on the calculator predicted that Obama will win the election in New Jersey. This will impact the election by adding 15 electoral votes to the Democratic ballot. I feel that the linear regression tool is a good way to predict the outcome of an election because the chance of a trend in polls suddenly changes to the polar opposite is very slim.
